In the latter half of the nineteenth century, the figure of the sick girl became increasingly prominent in the fields of medical science, art and literature. Looking back at this period, Norwegian artist Edvard Munch described it as 'the pillow era', a reference to its many depictions of sick people with their heads resting on a pillow.
